ABSTRACT

The main objective of current study was to investigate the chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic activity of Artemisia vulgaris extract on diethylnitrosoamine induced hepatocarcinogenesis in Balb C mice. Diethylnitrosoamine (DEN: 0.9%) was prepared to induce hepatocarcinoma in Balb C mice. The extract Artemisia vulgaris (AV) was prepared by maceration technique. Mice were classified into four groups as follows: Group 1 a control group (N=7) received saline solution (3.5 l/mg), group 2 (N=14) received diethylnitrosoamine (3.5 l/mg) intraperitoneally once in a week for eight consecutive weeks, group 3 (N=7) received only plant extract (AV: 150 mg/kg (Body weight) once in a week, while group 4 (N=7) was given in combination of diethylnitrosoamine (3.5 l/mg) and plant extract (AV: 150 mg/kg (body weight). After eight weeks of DEN administration, mice of group 2 were divided into two subgroups containing seven mice each; subgroup 1 was sacrificed while subgroup 2 was treated with plant extract only (150 mg/kg (body weight)) once in a week for eight consecutive weeks. The DEN injected mice significant decline in levels of albumin with concomitant significant elevations such as aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, alpha feto protein, gamma glutamyl transferase, 5 nucleotidase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and bilirubin. The administration of A. vulgaris significantly decreased the DEN induced hepatotoxicity. Present study revealed the potential anti-cancerous nature of Artemisia vulgaris, both in case of chemopreventive and post-treatment of A. vulgaris. Further studies are needed to explore the mechanism of prevention and therapy.


O objetivo principal do presente estudo foi investigar as atividades quimiopreventiva e quimioterápica do extrato de Artemisia vulgaris em hepatocarcinogênese induzida por dietilnitrosoamina (DEN) em camundongos Balb C. Dietilnitrosoamina (DEN: 0,9%) foi preparada para induzir hepatocarcinoma em camundongos da linhagem Balb C. O extrato de A. vulgaris (AV) foi preparado pela técnica de maceração. O presente estudo apresentou a potencialidade anticancerosa da A. vulgaris, tanto nos casos de quimioprevenção quanto no pós-tratamento da A. vulgaris. Mais estudos são necessários para explorar o mecanismo de prevenção e a terapia.

ABSTRACT

The use of alternative therapeutic approaches in wild animals has gained notoriety due to its efficiency, low cost and reduced or nonexistent stressors. The present study evaluated the efficacy of treatment of a bilateral excoriative lesion in the region of the dorsal metacarpus in a Chilean skua (Catharacta chilensis) in a rehabilitation process with the use of a porous cell membrane, sold commercially, in concomitance with moxibustion sessions with herbs (Artemisia vulgaris). The healing time of 14 days was reduced when compared to traditional techniques and proved the viability and efficacy of the treatment.(AU)


O uso de abordagens terapêuticas alternativas em animais selvagens tem ganhado notoriedade em virtude de sua eficiência, baixo custo e estímulos estressores reduzidos ou inexistentes. Este estudo avaliou a eficácia do tratamento de uma lesão escoriativa bilateral em região do dorsal metacarpo em um mandrião chileno (Catharacta chilensis) em processo de reabilitação com o uso de uma membrana celular porosa vendida comercialmente, em concomitância com sessões de moxabustão com ervas (Artemisia vulgaris). O tempo de cicatrização de catorze dias mostrou-se reduzido quando comparado ao de outras técnicas tradicionais e provou a viabilidade e eficácia do tratamento.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Large snakes of the Boidae family, such as Eunectes murinus, require special techniques to facilitate their care when they are sick. Thus, an acupuncture technique called moxibustion was applied that utilizes burning of the weed Artemisia vulgaris for heating at specific points on the skin without handling the animals. The objective of this case report was to describe the use of moxibustion acupuncture as an auxiliary treatment for snakes. A female, 4.0 meters long and weighing about 30 kg, belonging to a Biological Museum of the Butantan Institute, showed symptoms of weight loss, anorexia and hyperemia in the ventral region. The snake was examined and treated with ciprofloxacin antibiotics and a month showed an area of necrosis that exposed the muscles in the dorsal cranial region. The female was treated with moxibustion and application of silver sulfadiazine cream at the site of the lesion. After seven months of treatment, the animal showed signs of good healing with complete wound closure. This technique of moxibustion could be easily applied without restraint, an important detail given the size of the snake, and with successful closure of the lesion.(AU)


Grandes serpentes da família Boidae, como Eunectes murinus, requerem técnicas especiais para facilitar seus cuidados quando estão doentes. Assim, uma técnica de acupuntura, chamada de moxabustão, foi aplicada utilizando-se a queima da erva Artemisia vulgaris para aquecer pontos específicos na pele, sem manusear os animais. O objetivo deste relato de caso foi descrever o uso da acupuntura moxabustão como um tratamento auxiliar para serpentes. Uma fêmea com 4,0m de comprimento e pesando cerca de 30kg, pertencente ao Museu Biológico do Instituto Butantan, apresentou sintomas de perda de peso, anorexia e hiperemia na região ventral. A serpente foi examinada e tratada com o antibiótico ciprofloxacina e um mês depois mostrou uma área de necrose, que expôs os músculos da região dorsal cranial. A fêmea foi tratada com moxabustão e aplicação do creme de sulfadiazina de prata no local da lesão. Depois de sete meses de tratamento, o animal mostrou sinais de boa cicatrização, com fechamento completo da ferida. Essa técnica de moxabustão pode ser facilmente aplicada sem restrição, um detalhe importante dado o tamanho da serpente, e com fechamento bem-sucedido da lesão.(AU)

ABSTRACT

O objetivo deste estudo foi conduzir uma revisão integrativa a fim de identificar publicações sobre a moxabustão e acupuntura para versão de fetos em apresentação pélvica. A ferramenta de pesquisa Paciente, Intervenção, Comparação e Desfecho, disponibilizada pela base de dados da Biblioteca Nacional de Medicina dos Estados Unidos, foi utilizada para gerar uma lista de artigos. As palavras utilizadas para a busca foram os termos breech, moxibustion, acupuncture e cephalic. A busca foi realizada no mês de março de 2016. Foram encontrados 24 registros, 18 foram analisados, dentre os quais sete foram favoráveis ao uso da moxabustão, e cinco, desfavoráveis. A partir dos estudos realizados sobre o tema, há evidências de que a moxabustão seja segura e efetiva para tentar "corrigir" apresentações pélvicas, apresentando-se como uma ferramenta no complemento da assistência prestada por profissionais na área da obstetrícia (AU).


The objective in this study was to develop an integrative review to identify publications on moxibustion and acupuncture to turn fetuses in breech position. The research tool Patient, Intervention, Comparison and Outcome, available through the database of the United States National Library of Medicine, was used to produce a list of articles. The words used for the search were: breech, moxibustion, acupuncture and cephalic. The search was undertaken in March 2016. Twenty-four registers were found, 18 of which were analyzed, seven of them favorable to the use of moxibustion and five unfavorable. Based on the studies developed on the theme, there is evidence that moxibustion is safe and effective to try and "correct" breech presentations, as a tool to complement the care midwifery professionals provide (AU).


El objetivo de este estudio fue desarrollar una revisión integradora para identificar publicaciones sobre la moxibustión y acupuntura para versión de fetos en presentación de nalgas. La herramienta de investigación Paciente, Intervención, Comparación y Desfecho, publicada por la base de datos de la Biblioteca Nacional de Medicina de Estados Unidos, fue utilizada para generar un rol de artículos. Las palabras utilizadas para la búsqueda fueron: breech, moxibustion, acupuncture y cephalic. La búsqueda fue llevada a cabo en marzo del 2016. Fueron encontrados 24 registros, 18 fueron analizados, entre los cuales siete fueron favorables al uso de la moxibustión y cinco desfavorables. A partir de los estudios desarrollados sobre el tema, hay evidencias de que la moxibustión sea segura y efectiva para intentar "corregir" presentaciones de nalgas, siendo una herramienta para complementar la atención prestada por profesionales en el área de partería (AU).

OBJECTIVE@#To identify the chemical constituents and biological activities of essential oil and crude methanol extract of Artemisia vulgaris (A. vulgaris) and Gaultheria fragrantissima (G. fragrantissima).@*METHODS@#Phytochemical screening, total phenolic and flavonoid content, antibacterial activities, anti-oxidant assay of the crude extract were carried out to identify the biological activities and phytonutrients present in the extract. Furthermore, the chemical constituents present in the essential oil and crude methanol extract were analyzed using gas chromatography mass spectroscopy and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis.@*RESULTS@#Gas chromatography mass spectroscopy analysis of essential oil from the aerial part of A. vulgaris revealed 24 different compounds in it. Sabinene (11.29%), β-thujone (19.19%), chrysanthenone (4.48%), camphor (11.89%), borneol (4.44%) and germacrene D (8.42%) were the major compounds. Similarly, leaves of G. fragrantissima contained methyl salicylate (95%) and asarone (4.64%). Furthermore, methanol extract of leaves of A. vulgaris and G. fragrantissima were found rich in the total flavonoids and phenolic content. HPLC analysis of the methanol extract of leaves A. vulgaris revealed the presence of morin and luteolin, whereas rutin was found as a major flavonoids compound in the leaves of G. fragrantissima. Further, methanol extract of the A. vulgaris and G. fragrantissima showed the highest antioxidant and antibacterial properties compared to the essential oil.@*CONCLUSIONS@#The HPLC analysis of the methanol extract of A. vulgaris shows the presence of luteolin and morin, whereas G. fragrantissima reveals the presence of rutin and a glycosylated flavonoids. Results reveal that A. vulgaris oil is the rich source of monoterpene and sesquiterpene compounds. Furthermore, A. vulgaris and G. fragrantissima are the rich source of the phenolic and flavonoids compounds and show good antioxidant and antibacterial activity.

ABSTRACT

AIM@#To evaluate the antifertility activity of Artemisia vulgaris leaves on female Wistar rats.@*METHOD@#The plant extract was tested for its effect on implant formation at two dose levels, 300 and 600 mg·kg⁻¹, respectively. The effective methanolic plant extract was further studied for estrogenic potency on ovariectomised immature female Wistar rats.@*RESULTS@#The data presented in this study demonstrate the antifertility potential of Artemisia vulgaris methanolic leaf extract, which shows a strong and significant decrease in implant formation (100%), and a strong estrogenic effect resulting in a significant increase in uterine weight in immature ovariectomised rats. These observations suggest that the methanolic extract of Artemisia vulgaris leaves has strong anti-implantation activity and estrogenic activity.@*CONCLUSION@#The methanolic plant extract of A. vulgaris has antifertility activity.

ABSTRACT

Artemisia vulgaris (AV) is an antihelmintic and antimalarial drug; Aloe vera(babosa) acts as antidiabetic, laxative and anti-inflammatory;Benznidazole (BZ) is a trypanocidal of Trypanosoma cruzi (TC). Technetium-99m (99mTc) has been used in nuclear medicine to obtain diagnostic images. This study evaluated the plant effects in TC parasitemia and on the biodistribution of 99mTc in mice. Twenty mice were infected by TC. At the peak of parasitemia, 5 mice received babosa; 5 received AV and 5 received BZ. The parasitemia was determined at 0, 2, 4 and 6 h of drugs administration. Five infected mice without drugs, 5 mice without TC and the group treated withAV, received 99mTc. The radioactivity was calculated. Infected mice that received babosa reduced significantly(p<0.05) the TC parasitemia. The percentage of activity per gram (%ATI/g) decreased significantly on the AVgroup. These results indicate that babosa possibly is an anti-TC drug and AV reduces the %ATI/g probably due toits biological effects.


A Artemisia vulgaris (AV) é uma planta com atividades antihelmíntica e antimalárica. Aloe vera (babosa) tem ação antidiabética, laxante e antiinflamatória. Benzonidazol (BZ) é uma droga tripanosomicida contra o Trypanosoma cruzi (TC), agente da doença de Chagas. Tecnécio-99m(99mTc) tem sido usado na medicina nuclear para obtenção de imagens diagnósticas. Este estudo avaliou o efeito de plantas na parasitemia do TC ena biodistribuição do 99mTc em camundongos. Vinte camundongos foram infectados por TC. No pico da parasitemia, 5 camundongos receberambabosa; 5 receberam AV e 5 receberam BZ. A parasitemia foi determinada durante os tempos 0, 2, 4 e 6 horas após administração das drogas. Cinco camundongos infectados e não tratados, 5 camundongos não infectados e o grupo tratado com AV receberam 99mTc, na forma de pertecnetato de sódio. A radioatividade foi calculada. Os animais infectados que receberam babosa reduziram significativamente (p<0.05) aparasitemia. A porcentagem da radioatividade por grama (%ATI/g) diminuiu significativamente no grupo tratado com AV. Estes resultados indicamque a babosa possivelmente é uma droga anti-TC e a AV reduz a %ATI/g provavelmente devido seus efeitos biológicos e/ou metabólicos.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of an extract of the Artemisia vulgaris L. (mugwort) on the labeling of blood constituents with technetium-99m (99mTc). Blood samples from Wistar rats were incubated with a mugwort extract and the radiolabeling of blood constituents was carried out. Plasma and blood cells were separated by centrifugation. Aliquots of plasma and blood cells were also precipitated with trichloroacetic acid and centrifuged to isolate soluble and insoluble fractions of plasma and blood cells. Radioactivity in each fraction was counted and the percentages of radioactivity ( percentATI) was calculated. Mugwort extract decreased significantly (p<0.05) the percentATI on the blood compartments and on the blood cells proteins (insoluble fraction). The analysis of the results indicates that the extract could have substances that could interfere on the transport of stannous through the erythrocyte membrane alterating the labeling of blood cells with 99mTc.


O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da Artemisia vulgaris L.(artemisa) na marcação dos constituintes sangüíneos com tecnécio-99m (99mTc). Amostras de sangue obtidas de ratos Wistar foram incubadas com um extrato de artemisa e o processo de radiomarcação dos constituintes sangüíneos foi realizado. Plasma e células sangüíneas foram isoladas por centrifugação. Alíquotas de plasma e células sangüíneas foram também precipitadas com ácido tricloroacético para isolamento de frações solúvel e insolúvel. A radiatividade em cada fração foi contada e as porcentagens de radioatividade ( por centoATI) foram calculadas. O extrato de artemisa diminuiu significantemente (p<0,05) a por centoATI nas células sanguíneas e nas proteínas celulares. A análise dos resultados indicou que o extrato de artemisa apresentaria substâncias que interferir no transporte de íons estanoso e/ou pertecnetato através da membrana do eritrócito alterando a marcação das células sangúineas com 99mTc.
